Rink Rat Productions

Rink Rat productions has produced high quality programming with a special focus on arts and comedy, for the past sixteen years. Founded in 1994, Rink Rat is based in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada and is one of the major production companies in the province. The current directors of the company are producer Mary Sexton and writer Ed Riche.

Past productions include; The comedy series, Dooley Gardens, which aired on the CBC Television in 1999, the 2000 music documentary, Ron Hynes: The Irish Tour, for CTV in Canada and RTE in Ireland. In 2003 Rink Rat co-produced the feature drama, Behind The Red Door, starring Kiefer Sutherland, with Equinox Entertainment.

In 2006 and 2007 respectively, Rink Rat co-produced two feature length arts documentaries; To Think Like A Composer, with Cine Metu, for CBC Television and Bravo! And Christopher House: Ahead of the Curve, with Rock Island Productions for Bravo!

Rink Rat Productions has two daughter companies; Dark Flowers Productions and 2M Innovative Inc.

Mary Sexton and writer/director Rosemary House formed Dark Flowers Productions Inc. in 1998. Their flag ship project, the feature film Violet premiered in September of 2000 at the Montreal International Film Festival. Dark Flowers followed Violet with the documentary Hospital City that aired on CBC in 2004.  

Mary Sexton and writer/director/actress Mary Walsh founded 2M Innovative in 2001. In 2004 2M produced the critically acclaimed and equally controversial CBC comedy pilot, Hatching, Matching & Dispatching. The series followed in 2005, quickly developing a cult following of hardcore fans.

2M is presently developing a feature length holiday comedy entitled A Christmas Furey.

Mary Sexton, Producer

Mary Sexton is an award winning producer and director with over twenty years of experience in the Canadian film industry. Since co-founding Rink Rat Productions in 1994, Sexton has become one of the leading producers of television and film in Newfoundland & Labrador. In 2001 Mary earned her first Gemini Award for her directorial debut Tommy: A Family Portrait. Sexton also served as regional producer on the hit CTV elimination reality contest Canadian Idol for six seasons.  

Mary Sexton (and her company Rink Rat) has also become the leading locations provider in Newfoundland and Labrador.  Mary has provided locations and production services from visiting domestic one-off productions (such as the Juno Awards etc), to foreign-based service productions (films, MOW’s etc) to sizeable indigenous productions for television.

Mary Sexton is a Board Member of the Canadian Film and Television Producers Association and the President of the Film Producers Association of Newfoundland.

 


Ed Riche, Writer

Edward Riche is a noted writer for page, stage and screen.  He has won numerous awards for his novels and his work in cinema, television and radio.  Mr. Riche is best known for Rare Birds, the novel and the screenplay, many episodes of Made in Canada and the radio program The Great Eastern.
 
Most recently he completed writing, with Rick Mercer, High Alert, a feature film screenplay commissioned by Norman Jewison. He is currently writing the pilot script for the series Adams Apple, produced by Westwind for CBC Television and the screenplay of an animated film by Bruce Alcock for Global Mechanic and the National Film Board of Canada.
